Your heating has stopped working. Before you call us - and we're always happy to help - there are a few things you can check yourself that might save you a call-out.
Check the Thermostat
It sounds obvious, but check your thermostat is turned up and set to "heat" mode. If you have a programmer or timer, make sure it's set to the right time and the heating schedule is active. If your thermostat uses batteries, check they haven't died. A blank screen usually means flat batteries, not a broken boiler.
Check the Boiler Pressure
Look at the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. It should read between 1 and 1.5 bar (the green zone on most gauges). If it's below 1, your boiler may have locked out. You can repressurise it yourself using the filling loop - it's usually a braided silver hose underneath the boiler with a valve at each end. Open both valves slowly until the pressure reaches 1.2-1.5 bar, then close them. If you're not comfortable doing this, give us a call.
Check the Radiators
If some radiators are hot and others aren't, the cold ones may need bleeding. Air gets trapped in radiators over time and stops hot water circulating. Use a radiator key to open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator until water starts to come out, then close it. Have a cloth ready - the water can be dirty.
Check for Error Codes
Modern boilers display error codes when something goes wrong. Check your boiler manual or search the code online to see what it means. Some codes indicate minor issues you can reset yourself; others require a qualified engineer.
When to Call a Professional
If you can smell gas, call the Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. Don't switch anything on or off, open windows, and leave the house.
