Emergency Plumber in Nottingham: What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

It's 2am, there's water pouring through the kitchen ceiling, and you're standing in your pyjamas wondering what to do. A burst pipe is one of the most stressful things that can happen in your home, but how you react in the first few minutes makes a huge difference to how much damage it causes.

Step 1: Turn Off the Water

The first thing you need to do is stop the flow of water. Find your stopcock - it's usually under the kitchen sink, in the downstairs toilet, or where the mains pipe enters your house. Turn it clockwise until it's fully closed. If you're not sure where your stopcock is, find it now before you ever need it in an emergency. Test it occasionally to make sure it hasn't seized up.

Step 2: Turn Off the Electrics

If water is near any electrical fittings, sockets, or your consumer unit, turn off the electricity at the mains. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Don't touch any electrical switches or appliances that are wet.

Step 3: Contain the Water

Put towels, buckets, or containers under the leak to catch as much water as possible. If water is coming through the ceiling, it may be pooling above - gently pierce the bulge with a screwdriver over a bucket to release it in a controlled way rather than waiting for the ceiling to collapse.

Step 4: Call Your Plumber

Once the immediate situation is under control, call an emergency plumber. At Tami Plumbing, we're available 24/7 for emergencies across Nottingham. Call 07706 229 545 and you'll speak to Aimen directly - no call centres, no automated systems. We aim to be with you within the hour for emergencies in the Nottingham area.

What NOT to Do

Don't try to fix the pipe yourself unless you genuinely know what you're doing - a bodged repair can cause more damage than the original burst. Don't use a hairdryer or heat gun on frozen pipes (a common cause of bursts in winter) as the rapid temperature change can cause more cracks. And don't ignore a slow leak thinking it'll be fine until morning - water damage gets exponentially worse with time.

Preventing Burst Pipes

The most common cause of burst pipes in Nottingham is freezing temperatures. Insulate any exposed pipes in your loft, garage, or under the house. If you're going away in winter, leave your heating on low (at least 12 degrees) to prevent pipes freezing. A little prevention saves a lot of emergency call-outs.
