People plan a bathroom refit as a shopping exercise and then experience it as a sequencing problem. The tiles and the basin are the easy part. The difficulty is that a bathroom is the one room where plumbing, electrics, tiling, plastering and joinery all have to happen in a fixed order, in a small space, and where getting the order wrong means undoing finished work.

First fix decides what you can still change
First fix is the stage where pipework and cabling are run and buried before anything is closed up. Once walls are boarded, tiled and plastered, moving a waste or a feed means opening finished surfaces again. So first fix is the deadline for every decision about position, and that includes some things that feel like late choices.
Two examples show why. A wall-hung basin and a pedestal basin need their waste and feeds at completely different heights, so the basin has to be chosen, not just imagined, before the wall closes. A bath filler mounted on the rim needs different provision from one mounted on the wall, and a shower valve position depends on the exact valve. The rule of thumb worth adopting: nothing that touches water gets ordered after first fix begins.

Waste and fall are the real constraints
Water arrives under pressure and can be routed almost anywhere. Waste leaves under gravity and cannot. That asymmetry is why bathroom layouts are less free than they look, and why the toilet is the most constrained item in the room: it needs a short, direct run to the soil stack with adequate fall, and moving it any real distance changes the job substantially.
Shower trays and wet floors raise the same issue. A tray needs enough height beneath it for the waste and its trap to sit with a fall to the stack, which is why a low-profile tray on a solid floor is sometimes not possible without work under the floor. Where a pump is proposed to get around a fall problem, treat it as a considered decision rather than a free fix: it adds something mechanical, and therefore something that can fail, to a room where a failure is unwelcome.
Ventilation, electrics and what the zones mean
Bathrooms are wet rooms in the electrical sense, and the regulations divide them into zones according to proximity to water. What may be installed where depends on which zone it sits in and its ingress protection rating. This is why a light or a socket that would be unremarkable in a bedroom is not acceptable next to a bath, and why the electrical side of a bathroom is not general DIY.
Ventilation is the part most often under-specified, and the consequences arrive months later as black mould in the grout and peeling paint. An extractor has to actually move the moist air outside, which means the duct route matters as much as the fan: a powerful fan pushing into a long, crushed flexible duct or terminating in a loft space is not ventilating the room. Where a bathroom has no openable window, mechanical extraction is not optional.

Can I move the toilet to the other side of the bathroom?
Sometimes, but it is the most expensive thing on a layout drawing. A toilet drains by gravity to the soil stack and needs a short run with consistent fall, so moving it across the room means either re-routing waste within the floor structure or building up the floor to gain fall, and occasionally it is not achievable without work in the room below. Get this answered before a layout is agreed, because it determines everything else in the room.
How long should I expect the room to be out of use?
Longer than the fitting itself, because of drying and curing time that cannot be compressed. Plaster, adhesive, screed and grout each need their own time before the next trade can start, and a bathroom has several of those stages in sequence. The realistic answer for any individual job depends on the layout changes, the floor build-up and whether anything unexpected appears once the old suite is out, which is why a fixed promise before anyone has seen behind the existing tiling is worth little. Ask for the sequence and the waiting points rather than a single number.
