There is a particular kind of boiler history that appears again and again: a part replaced, a good few months, the same symptom, another part, another few months. Each visit was competent and each part had genuinely failed. What nobody addressed was why it kept failing.

Pressure that will not stay up
Topping up a sealed system now and then is normal. Topping up weekly means water is leaving, and there are only three places it goes: out through a weep on the pipework, out through the pressure relief valve to its outside discharge, or out because the expansion vessel has lost its charge and is pushing water through that valve every time the system heats up.
The third is the one that gets missed, because the visible symptom is a passing relief valve and the tempting repair is a new valve. Fit one without recharging or replacing the vessel and the new valve passes too, usually within weeks. The check is quick: the vessel's air pressure is measured with the system drained down, and either recharged or replaced.

The heat exchanger that blocks again
Magnetite, the black sludge that forms as steel radiators corrode from the inside, collects wherever flow slows down. In a modern boiler that means the narrow passages of the heat exchanger, which then overheats, cycles noisily and eventually fails. Replacing the exchanger without cleaning the system installs a new component into the same conditions that destroyed the old one.
Proper practice is a chemical cleanse or power flush, fresh inhibitor and a magnetic filter fitted on the return, with the filter emptied at every service. A system that has been cleaned and dosed and still produces black water within a year is telling you it is drawing in fresh water somewhere, which brings the story back to the leak.

Ignition faults and the pattern that identifies them
A boiler that tries, fails and locks out is failing to prove a flame. The cause may be gas supply, ignition electrodes, the flame sensing itself, or a blocked condensate trap making the boiler shut down for a different reason entirely, and these get confused with each other regularly.
The most useful thing a household can supply is the pattern: whether it fails from cold, only when the heating and hot water are both demanded, only in wet weather, or at random. That description narrows the search before any panel is removed, and it is the difference between a diagnosis and a sequence of substitutions.
- Note whether it fails from cold, under load or at random.
- Record the fault code exactly, including any letter.
- Repeated resets that work briefly still count as a fault.
How to break the cycle
The question worth asking any engineer is not what part failed but what killed it. Sludge, an undercharged expansion vessel, a leak drawing in fresh water, poor combustion or a system running hotter than it should are the usual answers, and every one of them is fixable in a way that stops the meter running on repairs.
There is also a point where repair stops making sense: an old appliance with obsolete parts, a heat exchanger failure on a boiler well past its warranty, or a third significant repair inside two years.
