Heating systems do not fail randomly through the year. They fail in the first properly cold week, in large numbers, because that is the first time in months anything has been asked to work. Every engineer's diary fills in the same fortnight for exactly that reason.

Run it for an hour and walk the house
Turn the heating on, set the thermostat well above the room temperature so the system genuinely calls for heat, and let it run for a full hour. Five minutes proves nothing, because most informative faults only appear once everything is up to temperature.
Then walk round and touch every radiator, top and bottom, including the ones in rooms nobody uses. Three things are worth noting: radiators that stay cold, radiators cold in one specific part, and radiators that get hot much faster than the rest.
Write it down rather than trusting memory. A written list of which radiators misbehaved and how is genuinely the most useful thing you can hand an engineer, and it turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit.
Central heating work should look at the whole system: boiler performance, radiator sizing, valves, pipe routes, controls, pressure, sludge symptoms and whether every room heats evenly. Your walk round supplies half of that for free.
- Run the system for a full hour, not a token few minutes.
- Touch every radiator top and bottom, including unused rooms.
- Note which are cold and which part of them is cold.
- Check thermostatic valve heads still turn freely.
What a still summer does
Several classic autumn faults are caused by nothing more than months of inactivity. Thermostatic valve pins seize in position, leaving a radiator permanently cold or permanently hot whatever the head is set to. Pumps that have not turned since spring occasionally decline to start.
Diverter valves stick, which shows up as hot water but no heating, or heating coming on whenever a hot tap runs. Air accumulates at the high points over a still summer and needs bleeding out before anything performs properly.
Almost all of these are small jobs in September and expensive nuisances in December. A seized valve pin can often be freed rather than replaced when it is caught before somebody forces the head.
It is also the sensible moment for anything you already know needs doing. A radiator you have been meaning to replace, a thermostat that has never worked properly, or pipework that has been noisy for a year: all easier to schedule now than to fit in around a breakdown.
Read the pressure gauge
The pressure gauge is the best diagnostic instrument in the house and almost nobody looks at it. Note what it reads cold, and again after an hour of running. Some rise when hot is normal.
What is not normal is a steady fall over days or weeks. A sealed system should hold pressure for months. If you are topping up regularly, water is leaving somewhere, and every refill introduces fresh oxygenated water that speeds up corrosion inside the radiators and boiler.
Noise is the other free signal. Kettling, ticking and banging pipework point at restricted circulation and deposits rather than anything glamorous, and a pump that has become noticeably noisier is telling you about its remaining life.
Radiators that are cold at the bottom, a noisy boiler or uneven heating can all point to circulation problems, in which case the next step may be power flushing, boiler repair or, where the appliance is genuinely tired, boiler installation.
- Note the pressure cold, then hot, then again a week later.
- A steady fall means a leak, not a topping-up habit.
- Kettling and banging point at deposits and restricted flow.
- A newly noisy pump is a warning worth acting on.
Where to stop and call
Bleeding a radiator that is cold at the top is a reasonable thing to do yourself, and so is working a thermostatic head open and closed a few times to see whether a stuck pin frees.
Beyond that, the sensible line is anything involving the appliance, the gas, the pressure vessel, or a system that will not hold its pressure. Those need somebody qualified, and repeatedly topping up a leaking system while you decide is actively making the internal condition worse.
Booking early has a practical advantage beyond the diary. A fault found in warm weather can be fixed on a normal appointment with the right parts, rather than as an emergency in a cold house with whatever is on the van.
