Vented and unvented cylinders

A vented cylinder is fed from a cold water tank in the loft and is common in older homes. An unvented cylinder runs at mains pressure with no loft tank, and by law it must be installed by someone holding the G3 unvented qualification. My hot water runs out quickly. Does the cylinder need replacing?
Not always. Aimen checks the thermostat, the immersion heater and the timer settings first, because any of them can leave you short of hot water.
How can I tell if my cylinder is vented or unvented?
If a cold water tank in the loft feeds it, it is vented. An unvented cylinder usually has an expansion vessel and a warning label on the side, and there is no tank in the loft.
What should I send for a cylinder quote?
A photo of the cylinder, its label, the pipework around it and the cupboard, plus what is going wrong and how many people live in the house.
